🏆 About the Tournament

The annual Janus Open Memorial Chess Tournament will be held in Kolshøll, Eiði.

The tournament is in honour of Janus í Løðuni, an active member of the chess club Rókur, who passed away on 6 July 2024 at the age of just 46.


📜 Format

  • Open to all chess players.

  • Games played by players with a rating above 2400 will not be FIDE-rated.

Friday 9 January

  • Rounds 1 – 4: 18:00

Saturday 10 January

  • Round 5: 10:00

  • Round 6: 14:00

Sunday 11 January

  • Round 7: 13:30

  • Round 8: 17:00


⏳ Time Controls

  • Rounds 1 – 4: 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move

  • Rounds 5 – 8: 60 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move


💰 Prizes

  • Total prize fund: 28,000 DKK

  • 1st place: 5,000 DKK

  • 2nd place: 3,000 DKK

  • 3rd place: 2,000 DKK

Rating group prizes (in each group): 1,000 DKK and 500 DKK

  • The organizers reserve the right to close registration once 100 registrations have been received.


⏳ Byes

  • Players may request up to 3 byes.

  • Each bye gives 0.5 points.

  • A bye in Round 1 must be requested in writing when registering.

  • All other byes must be agreed with the arbiter before pairings are made.

  • No byes can be requested for Round 8.
